Interview Dr Hammer - Pectus Excavatum

Interview with Dr Hammer: Pectus, Chest Wall Deformities and Breast Augmentation

Specialised in breast reconstruction, Dr Hammer highlights the benefits of this minimally invasive technique, which provides natural aesthetic results while addressing the strong psychological impact associated with these deformities. She also emphasizes the importance of a comprehensive and staged treatment approach, particularly when these corrections are part of a breast augmentation procedure.

I am Dr Hammer, a plastic surgeon based in Brussels, mainly practicing breast reconstruction, as well as aesthetic and perineal surgery.

What is your feedback regarding the 3D implant technique?

We use 3D custom-made implants for Poland syndrome and Pectus Excavatum. It is a minimally invasive technique for patients while providing excellent aesthetic results, helping patients who experience significant psychological distress.

Could you give an example of a case treated with this technique?

One example is a patient who initially consulted for breast augmentation. During the examination, I noticed that she had Pectus Excavatum. In this situation, it is essential to first correct the chest wall deformity with a custom-made implant before performing the breast augmentation.

If this sequence is not respected, the risk is obtaining a very unaesthetic result that would not satisfy the patient.

Does Pectus have a psychological impact?

Patients often mention significant psychological distress, especially when getting dressed, wearing a swimsuit or choosing certain clothes.

It is so important for them that they are willing to undergo surgery, even if it means having a thoracic scar, which they consider minimal compared to the benefits provided by the implant.

These patients often seek psychological relief more than treatment for an actual functional issue.
